    • For information on a steam powered trolley ‘car’ built in China in about 1672 see Part 1, The Early History, Section 3.2.

    • The first car to be driven in China was brought into the country in 1902 for use by Empress Dowager Ci Xi. It was made by the American Duryea Brothers.

    • The 4 hp car had a wooden body and a double row of seats. It was fitted with pneumatic tyres and was fitted with a kerosene lamp.

    • It was driven by Sun Fuling. Because he was in the presence of the Empress there is a report that she initially ordered him to kneel whilst driving the car.
