The first car to be driven in China was brought into the country in 1902 for use by Empress Dowager Ci Xi. It was made by the American Duryea Brothers.
The 4 hp car had a wooden body and a double row of seats. It was fitted with pneumatic tyres and was fitted with a kerosene lamp.
It was driven by Sun Fuling. Because he was in the presence of the Empress there is a report that she initially ordered him to kneel whilst driving the car.
