Types of Fuel Used in Fuel Cell Powered Cars
8.7Types of Fuel Used
Compressed hydrogen has been the most commonly used fuel – employed in nearly half of all fuel cells. See Green Cars, Section 3.3 (Hydrogen).
Between 1997 and 2001 the second most popular fuel was methanol. See Green Cars, Section 3.2.5 (Methanol). Why did interest in this fuel decline after 2001?
Other fuels include: Low sulphur/clean gasoline, hydride-sodium borohydride (catalyized chemical), hydrogen stored in metal hydride and liquid hydrogen.
Compressed hydrogen has been used at the following pounds per square inch (psi) pressure: 3600, 4300, 5000 and 10000.
