8.7   Types of Fuel Used  
    • Compressed hydrogen has been the most commonly used fuel – employed in nearly half of all fuel cells. See Green Cars, Section 3.3 (Hydrogen).

    • Between 1997 and 2001 the second most popular fuel was methanol. See Green Cars, Section 3.2.5 (Methanol).Why did interest in this fuel decline after 2001?

    • Other fuels include: Low sulphur/clean gasoline, hydride-sodium borohydride (catalyized chemical), hydrogen stored in metal hydride and liquid hydrogen.

    • Compressed hydrogen has been used at the following pounds per square inch (psi) pressure: 3600, 4300, 5000 and 10000.
