6.4 The First Purpose Built Petrol Powered 4 Wheeled Cars

    • In 1889 Gottlieb Daimler built the world's first known purpose built four-wheeled car.
    • It was powered by a high speed, water cooled, petrol fuelled four-stroke engine that he had designed. The vehicle also had axle-pivot steering.
    • In about 1893 Karl Benz built a four-wheeled car.
    • The vehicle was called the “Viktoria” and was  powered by a 3 hp petrol powered four-stroke engine that Benz had designed. It had a top speed of 18 kph (11 mph).
