In 1923 there were about 65,000 cars in Japan, most of which were taxis.
In 1953Hino Motors started manufacturing Renault 4CV cars under licence.
The company built its own car, the Countess 900, in 1961. The car had an 893 cc, rear-mounted 35 hp (26kW) engine.
Two 1300 models introduced in 1964 had a 1,251 cc engine that developed 60 hp/44 kW (Sedan) or 70 hp/51 KW (coupe).
In 1966 the company was taken over by Toyota and Hino ceased producing cars in 1967.
Between 1957 and 1961Mikasa built a sedan, a station wagon and a convertible. All three models were fitted with air cooled 2-cylinder 20 hp (15 kW) engines.
The major producers of cars in Japan in 2005 were (figures in millions): Toyota 1.22M, Honda 1.21M, Suzuki 0.92M, Mazda 0.8M, Mitsubishi 0.55M and Daihatsu 0.54M.
